OUTREACH the newsletter of 7444 7 e matatt miatt 70d4t&a mtatt Mt att 9 M sfaiutwt 5wzwd vwe vw& umcutmeu mteztcmttt MARCUS BACH director aj no 62 THE LETTER dear friend of the fellowship the other day I 1 had a telephone call from a TV station in chicago requesting information on the hutterite hutterites Hutt erite people this ABC affiliate was planning a newsstrip news strip on this christian communal group which I 1 have researched and about whom I 1 1 have done considerable writing years ago photographer ralph crane of LIFE magazine was with me in south dakota to get a picture story of these people and I 1 remember the difficulty we mim MIX had because oftheir of their aversionto aversion to being I 1 doubt whether photographed anyone GIRLS OF THE COMMUNE LORENA BACH in america has more photographs of hutterian hutterman Hut terian life than lorena mrs bach chiefly because through the years we have tried sincerely to study and understand the hutterites hutterite Hutt erite movement as we have many other groups in the USA I 1 once wrote a book THE DREAM GATE published by bobbs merrill the sympathetic story of a young hutterite hutterites Hutt erite boy and his experiences in adjusting to commune life ilfe the dream gate referred to the commune gate through which this boy little mike looked with longing wondering what america was really ilke like and what other young people believed wondering where the sound of cars and aero acro aeroplaner aeroplanes planes took people and where his own dreams would lead him when he grew up to be a bearded cider in the restricted hutterian hutterman Hut terian terlan commune the call from the TV station came just at the time that a movie producer in hollywood had read THE DREAM GATE and also on the very day that stories about the hutterite hutterites Hutt erite people and the amish appeared in metropolitan newspapers the point was made that though our government was opening the doors to china there were many unknown areas of interest and social significance in our own country about which people knew all HARVEST TIME IN THE COMMUNE LORENA BACH too little
