Abstract (English)	Nutritional and health behavior of the indigenous pregnant women in the community of Tunshi-San Nicolás, Chimborazo Province Sandra Ordoñez Gavilanez The following points discovered from the studied work: 1. In the community of Tunshi-San Nicolás the population is composed of mainly females(54%).2. As for the attention given to health, 38.46% of the pregnant women go to medical controlbecause their agricultural and cattle-raising labors do not permit them to have regular controlcheck-ups during pregnancy.3. 23.07% of the women are taken care of in the hospitals while the greater percentage (76.92%)are taken care in their homes.4. The lack of knowledge about the value of food during pregnancy does not allow them to havean adequate combination in their daily diet. Their nourishment consists of cereals, legumes,some vegetables and a reduced quantity of protein because they consume very little food ofanimal origin which have a high nutritional value.5. The majority of women are not aware of family planning because they are not interested orbecause of their husband 19s negative attitude towards it. Women older than 35 years of age havethe greater number of children.6. The husbands consider that it is important for a pregnant woman to be given attention but thelack of income and their customs permit the wives to work even until hours before giving birth.7. According to the increase in weight, 50% are normal, 33.33% are overweight, and 16.7% areunderweight.8. As far as work, 69.23% of the husbands work in agriculture and in cattle-raising due to thefact that they are an economically active and productive community.9. As far as the literacy level of the women studied, 7.69% were found to be illiterate.10. As far as the housing risk index, 84.61% are moderately at risk. This problem requireshealth programs. The basic infrastructure systems are absent in this community. They do nothave an adequate sewer system so the only thing available to them is bottled water.
Abstract (Spanish)	La situación alimentaria nutricional en nuestro pais es alarmante , por lo que se ha clasificado como el mayor problema de salud pública, su principal manifestacion manifestación es la desnutricion desnutrición proteico - energetica, con alta prevalencia en las zonas urbano - marginales y, en las poblaciones rurales. Se considera que las principales causas que lo originan por una parte, radican en el deterioro del nivel de ingreso de los sectores populares con la consiguiente imposibilidad de acceder a servicios basicos como vivienda, educacion, trabajos estables , servicios sanitarios (agua potable, alcantarillado, etc.) regimenes alimentarios adecuados, afectando grandemente a los grupos vulnerables como ninos y mujeres en edad fertil.
