Abstract (English)	The alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) known as the Queen of the legumes, due to its use for direct animal diet or by means of industrial process and like in the human diet, goes taking each time greater importance inside the agricultural field by permitting to increase the reserve of nitrogen on the ground due to the association with Rhizobium meliloti. The soil cultivated in the country and especially in the province of Chimborazo is important, for which is of interest to establish the answer of the cultivation to the inorganic fertilization, with regulations of the pH of the floor by means of whitewashing; based on that the literature declares that the answer of the cultivation in alkaline soils better than in another type of soil and therefore its performance improves, and provides greater economic return for the farmer. Currently it is considered that the cultivation of alfalfa is a good alternative for the rural sector, whether for the private demand of the cattle raisers as by the requests for the industry of the alfarina, being constituted in this manner in a source of economic incomes for the cultivators, motive by which is necessary to generate local information with the purpose of establishing the principles of the management of the soil that permit us to achieve adequate levels of productivity that satisfy the aspirations of the farmers that are dedicated to this exploitation.
Abstract (Spanish)	La alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) conocida como Reina de las leguminosas forrajeras, debido a su uso tanto para alimentación animal directa o mediante proceso industrial y como en la alimentación humana, va tomando cada vez mayor importancia dentro del campo agrícola por permitir incrementar la reserva de nitrógeno en el suelo debido a la asociación con Rhizobium meliloti meliloti. La superficie cultivada en el país y especialmente en la provincia de Chimborazo es importante, por lo que es de interés establecer la respuesta del cultivo a la fertilización inorgánica, con regulaciones del pH del suelo mediante encalamientos; basado en que la literatura manifiesta que la respuesta del cultivo en suelos alcalinos es mejor que en otro tipo de suelo y por ende su rendimiento mejora, lo cual redunda en un mayor rédito económico para el agricultor. En la actualidad se considera que el cultivo de alfalfa es una buena alternativa para el sector campesino, ya sea por la demanda particular de los ganaderos como por los requerimientos para la industria de la alfarina, constituyéndose de esta manera en una fuente de ingresos económicos para los cultivadores, motivo por el cual es necesario generar información local con la finalidadde establecer los principios del manejo de la fertilidad del suelo que nos permita lograr adecuados niveles de productividad que satisfagan las aspiraciones de los agricultores que se dedican a esta explotación.
