Title (English)	Botanical and chemical composition of diets selected by alpacas (Lama pacos) pastured in the Ulla Ulla wetlands

Abstract (English)	This study was done in the subtropical high Andes of Ulla Ulla. Its objectives were to determine the botanical composition, nutritional value, and preferred forages in the wetlands (hydromorphic and mŽsico) diet, by season (dry and wet), and by botanical family (12 families). Three-hundred sixty samples were collected from 6 alpacas with esophageal fistulations, and from them nutritional value and botanical composition were determined; the latter was compared with the botanical composition of the wetlands to determine preference. The results are highly significant (p<0.01) for botanical families, interaction between season and family, interaction of wetland type and family, and interaction of the season with wetland type and family. Species from the family Juncaceae were the most consumed with 27.78%, followed by moderate consumption of Cyperaceae (21.03%), Gramineae (15.02%), and Rosaceae (12.39%). Lower consumption occurred with Umbeliferaceae and Asteraceae with 6.61% and 5.64%, respectively, and the lowest consumption was of Plantaginaceae, Scrophulariaceae, minor plants, Gentianiaceae, unidentified plants, and Ranunculaceae with 2.86%, 2.50%, 2.17%, 2.08%, 1.03%, and 0.89%, respectively. The botanical families with the greatest preference value (PV) were Gramineae (PV=6.48), Scrophulariaceae (PV=8.75), Gentianiaceae (PV=7.55), and Ranunculaceae (PV=8.16). Proportional preference was observed in Juncaceae (PV=1.49), Cyperaceae (PV= -1.72), Rosaceae (PV=1.82), and Umbeliferaceae (PV= -0.82). The Asteraceae family was classified as a forced preference (PV= -6.29). The average nutritional value of the diet shows high values: 14.69% of raw protein, 14.58% ash, 85.42% organic matter, 21.43% raw fiber, and 31.00% neutral detergent fiber. It was concluded that alpacas efficiently select their diet for nutritional value, however, consumption is not appropriate, which results in negative live weight gain, especially in the dry season. On the other hand, the plantsÕ preference values correspond to the lowest and one of the highest is a forced preference, according to the botanical composition of the wetland, which suggests that the preferred plants are repeatedly consumed in current continual pastures, and that alpacas are forced to consume unpalatable plants. This reflects on bad CANAPAS wetlands management in Ulla Ulla. Consequently, reversing this situation implies changes in pasture management and a reduction of the animal load.
Abstract (Spanish)	El presente trabajo de investigación se realizó en el altoandino subhúmedo de Ulla Ulla, Los objetivos fueron: determinar la composición botánica y valor nutritivo de la dieta y preferencia de forraje por tipo de bofedal (mésico e hidromórfico), por época (húmeda y seca) y por familia botánica (12 familias). Se colectaron 360 muestras obtenidas de 6 alpacas con fístulas esofágicas, en las que se determinó su valor nutritivo y la composición botánica esta última fue comparada con la composición botánica de los bofedales para determinar preferencia. Los resultados presentan diferencias altamente significativas (p<0.01) para familias botánicas, interacción de época por familia, interacción tipo de bofedal por familia e interacción época por tipo de bofedal y familia botánica. Las especies de la familia Juncaceae con 27.78% fueron las mas consumidas, seguidas por las de consumo medio Cyperaceae (21.03%), Gramineae (15.02%) y Rosaceae (12.39%). Y las de bajo consumo Umbeliferaceae y Asteraceae con 6.61% y 5.64% respectivamente y las de muy bajo consumo Plantaginaceae, Scrophulariaceae, plantas inferiores, Gentianiaceae, no identificadas y Ranunculaceae con 2.86%, 2.50%, 2.17%, 2.08%, 1.03% y 0.89% respectivamente. Las familias botánicas de mayor valor de preferencia (VP) fueron: Gramineae (VP=6.48), Scrophulariaceae (VP=8.75), Gentianiaceae (VP=7.55) y Ranunculaceae (VP=8.16); las de preferencia proporcional, Juncaceae (VP= 1.49), Cyperaceae (VP=-1.72), Rosaceae (VP=1.82) y Umbeliferaceae (VP=-0.82); la familia Asteraceae fue clasificada de preferencia forzada (VP=-6.29). El valor nutritivo promedio de la dieta muestra valores altos: 14.69% de proteína cruda, 14.58% de ceniza, 85.42% de materia orgánica, 21.43% de fibra cruday 31.00% de fibra detergente neutro. Se concluyo que las alpacas seleccionan su dieta eficientemente por valor nutritivo, sin embargo, el consumo no es apropiado resultando en ganancias de peso vivo negativas, especialmente en la época seca, por otra parte, los valores de plantas preferidas corresponden a los mas bajos y uno de los mas altos los de preferencia forzada en la composición botánica del bofedal, lo que sugiere que las plantas preferidas son repetitivamente consumidas en el pastoreo continuo actual y las alpacas se ven forzadas al consumo las plantas no palatables, lo que refleja un mal manejo de CANAPAS tipo bofedal en Ulla Ulla. En consecuencia revertir esta situación implica cambios de manejo en pastoreo y reducción de la carga animal.
