night it was quite dark
before we got down the Mou
ntain we camped 13 mile

into the Valley early in after
noon and camped on the bench
were if it had been so misty
we should have had a good
view of the City I now feel
to give thanks and praise the
God of Israel for his goodness
unto me and my family in
bringing us innto this place
to be associated with the
best men of the Earth and all
so that my son James is re
covering his health and th at ^
according to my faith my
cattle have been preserved
we camped at Br Jacob
Hoffines about 10 Days and then
got a lot in the 10 ward and w[- - -]
about to build there untill
John Stoker came and wa
nted to buy a yoke of my
cattle and trade me a half lot ^

| Summary/Description | Handwritten autobiography and diary. In volume 1, Duke writes about his early life in England, his conversion to the Mormon Church in 1839, and life in Nauvoo, Illinois. Duke made the overland journey in 1850 from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the James Pace Company. He mentions several deaths in the company from cholera and writes mostly about daily traveling conditions and the company's organization. In volume 2, Duke writes about his life in Provo, Utah, and duties as bishop of the Provo First Ward. |
