| Full Text | Book 11 |
| Biographical Note | Mormon pioneer, schoolteacher and beekeeper. Huntington served two missions for the Church and crossed the plains twice to Utah. |
| Summary/Description | Handwritten diaries in 18 volumes. Also included are two handwritten volumes of patriarchal blessings given in Springville early in the 1930s. Also with the collection are ten miscellaneous items found in the diaries. Huntington was a member of the Mormon Church and lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, served on a mission to England, and made the overland journey to Utah in 1849 and 1852. Huntington describes the daily routine of overland travel, violent encounters with Indians, and counsel from Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church, who was captain of Huntington's company in 1849. Huntington also writes about difficult family relations with his wife and her parents on the 1852 trip. He later divorced and remarried. Huntington participated in exploring the route to Carson Valley, Nevada in 1853, went on a mission to the Ute Indians in 1855, and was part of an exploring expedition in 1856. He lived in the St. George, Utah, area for two years and later returned to Springville, Utah, to teach school. There are many gaps in the record. |
