              wm edwin edmin edmia 0 beal beai jr COMMITTEE ON AMERICAN LIBRARY RESOURCES FESOURCES ON THE FAR EAST OF THE association FOR ASIAN STUDIES february 18 196 1964 edwin G beal jr co orientalia division chairman library of congress washington D C 2050 205.0 20540 newsletter no 4 I 1 comments on irick proposal I 1 have now received from a number of you comments on the draft of january 2 196 196. 1964 in general the comments have been quite favorable though some matters of detail have been questioned for example a number of you have pointed to the great disparity between the proposed salary of the director of the center and the salaries of the various assistants mr irick proposes to employ in taiwan I 1 have discussed these comments vith with president william lockwood we have agreed that since the proposal is to be submitted to the board of directors very soon I 1 should not attempt to tinker with the amounts at this time but that instead the salary adjustments should be worked out by the project committee being appointed to advise and direct the undertaking when this committee is appointed I 1 expect to turn over to it copies of all comments I 1 have received on the irick proposal on the basis of these and some other comments I 1 prepared a slightly revised draft dated february 6 196 1964 which has been submitted to the board of directors for approval the project committee is to be set up on the same principle as that which advises the ming biographical history project it is being nominated by the executive group with the expectation that the nominations will be confirmed by the associations board of directors professor albert feuerwerker university of michigan is being nominated to serve as chairman of the project committee he recently spent a year in taiwan and has very good contacts with academic and publishing circles there the other members of the project committee are to be mary wright john lindbeck eugene eigene wu and the chairman of CALRFE for the time being myself the project committee is not to change the totalamount total tota lamount amount requested since there seems to be good reason to believe that thepresently the presently proposed sumof sumoff sun sum of 36600 is probably all we can hope to secure for the initial two years but it will have authority to make adjustments within that total it could for example increase the revolving fund as has been suggested by dr T he H tsien recommend the reprinting of pre ching works as has been suggested by dr ruth krader or recommend the reproduction of rare chinese nese local histories not otherwise available in the western world as has frequently been suggested by dr A W hummel or supervise the preparation of a basic list of chinese language materials that would voule be needed by new libraries at institutions just getting into the china
