              edwin Q boal boo bao dao jr kr COMMITTEE ON ambr AMER AMERICAN loan ICAN LIBRARY RESOURCES ON THE FAR EAST OF THE association FOR ASIAN STUDIES january 20 p 1966 edwin G beal jr co orientalia division chairman library of congress washington do D C 2050 20540 newsletter no 13 union card file of oribntal oriental vernacular serials chinese japanes japanese capanes and korean in 1959 when plans were being drawn up for the third and in all probability final edition of the union list of serials it was again pointed out that these plans did not provide for the inclusion of far eastern vernacular serials on a comprehensive basis attention had been brought to this fact a number of times notably by dr G raymond nunn who was at the time chairman of the committee on american library resources on the far east of the association for asian studies it had been noted in minutes of the committee and had been included in adcraft adraft a draft proposal drawn up by members of the committee at a meeting in berkeley california in july 1958 it had also been discussed in some detail by the orientalia processing committee of the library of congress it developed that there were several reasons why these titles could not be included 1 the third edition was not planned to be a comprehensive recompilation ofall cfall existing holdings but was designed essentially to be a republication in a single alphabet of all entries and information contained in the second edition 193 193 19.3 1943 L its first supplement 1945 1945 its second supplement 1953 and selected new titles and najor major additions of holdings up to the beginning of new serial titles 1950 and 2 very few of the periodical titles in oriental vernacular languages had been cataloged under standard ALALC ali ALA kli LC procedures which as a matter of fact had been extended to far eastern materials only in 1957 it was stated that before these serials could be included a great deal of cataloging would have to be done including such matters as tracing th the e history of changes in name of the issuing issuingbodies bodies changes in added titles in western languages coordination in volume numbering systems development of adequate cross references and many other matters to attempt to do these things would delay the publication of the third edition long beyond its scheduled time and would require far more funds than were available for this purpose A detailed and quite conservative estimate dated december 30 1959 of the additional cost of including oriental vernacular serials in the third edition of the ULS came to 7562 75624 7562 7562. 75624. 75624 consideration was then given to the problem of whether the entries for oriental vernacular material which were already in the second edition and its supplements should be withdrawn or should be allowed to stand though it was agreed that partial and incomplete listings might be misleading the consensus was that even such entries did more good than harm that they had proved useful as far as they went and that they should be allowed to stand
