              edwin 1 jl baal jr & THE association FOR ASIAN STUDIES INC COMMITTEE ON EAST ASIAN LIBRARIES yukihisa suzuki chairman asia library raymond N tang vang wang university of michigan library editor of newsletter annarbor ann arbor michigan 48104 newsletter no 26 november 15 1 1968 institutional nefs NEWS PROJECTS AND MATERIALS AN INSTITUTE ON bibliographic SERVICES IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES A summer instituteon institute institution on bibliographic services in east asian studies will be held at the library school of the university of wisconsin june 920 9 20 iggy 1969 under the directorship of mrs dorothea scott the objectives of the institute are 1 to improve the quality of the work of actual or potential bibliographers bibliograph ers of east asian collections through the expansion of background knowledge understanding and skill in the special problems of selection and acquisition of materials of cataloging and classification and of reference and reader service 2 to encourage biblio bibbio graphers grap hers of east asian collections to undertake continuing studies in their field 3 to demonstrate the value of intensive study of common problems by a group of professional librarians and the need for further study programs in this area two lectures illustrated with examples from chinese and japanese materials followed by a discussion period will form the typical morning program the double presentation of related topics should stimulate lively discussion which should be one of the most beneficial aspects of this method there will be two 2 hour afternoon seminars each week with the previous afternoon set aside for private study and assigned preparatory reading the two friday afternoons will be devoted to lectures on specialist topics participants the number is limited to 30 registrants approximately half thisfter ams 1ms wer mer will be those with some experience in the field and half will be pot potentim potentill potentia potentilla poten entill tiM east asian bibliographers bibliograph ers an admissions committee consisting of the director of the institute an admissions officer from the libraryschool library school and two members of the east asian languages C department will select the participants criteria for eligibility 1 A masters degree in library science will be required andor some experience working in an east asian library 2 A fluent reading knowledge of chinese and japanese will be required 3 A sound background know knowledge ledge of of the history and culture of east asia will be essential an appropriate degree from any university of good standing will be acceptable evidence of this 4 knowledgeof knowledge of another east asian language korean tibetan or mongolian for example will be an added advantage 1
