              FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members and Friends of CEAL:
This issue of the Journal of East Asian Libraries ( JEAL) includes articles on preservation
projects of Japanese- Canadian materials at the University of British Columbia, on the East Asian
Libraries Cooperative World Wide Web, on faculty involvement in the NCC, and on Japanese
company histories. In addition, there are reports of CEAL Committee activities and retirement
and new appointment notices.
I would like to call your attention particularly to the retirement notices of three long- term East
Asian librarians: Hideo Kaneko, Thomas Lee, and Frank Shulman, as well as the obituary of
another, K. T. Wu. I remember many years ago, near the beginning of my career in East Asian
libraries, Prof. Teng Ssu- yti ( Deng Siyu) quoted to me a Chinese proverb roughly translated as
    When you see a tree, think of its roots   . The quote was meant to encourage me to remember the
origins of East Asian studies on our campus. Similarly, I believe it is well to remember that
those of our profession who came before us were the     roots    of the     tree    that CEAL has become.
Summarizing their long and productive careers here, we honor them and remind ourselves that
our work is built upon the contributions of those who came before us. In remembering those
who came before us, we also reflect on what we value most in our profession.
In the future, we hope to include in our Journal more articles on the lives and work of those who
have contributed to our profession in the past. If you are in a position to share your reflections
on any of these individuals ( or even to interview them!), I encourage you to contribute such
articles to the JEAL editor, Gail King.
