A Sa Majesté Le Roi de Sardaigne Scritto all’[…] […] […] 20 febbrajo Riposto […] […] 26 febbrajo Sire, Les habitants de Menton opprimés depuis longues années osent recourir à Votre Majesté pour en implorer l’auguste et puissant appui. Malgré leur vif désir de voir s’améliorer leur position, ils ne se sont jamais écartés de leurs devoirs envers leur Souverain, en employant toujours les voies légales pour lui faire parvenir l’expression de leurs besoins. Ces besoins se bornaient à être régis par les mêmes institutions que Votre Majesté a daigné octroyer à ses peuples. Le Prince en avait solennellement fait la promesse, et nous croiyons toucher au moment de sortir enfin de l’état d’oppression sous la quelle nous gemissions depuis trente [et] trois ans, lorsque les concessions faites n’ont été pour nous qu’une amère déception. Votre Majesté s’en convaincra si elle daigne jeter les yeux sur la Charte qui nous a été donnée. Cette charte non seulement ne garantit pas les intérêts materiels du pays ; mais elle renferme des éléments de désordre. Nous supplions en conséquence très respectivement Votre Majesté de daigner jeter un regard secourable sur une population, dont les malheurs et la longanimité sont dignes des simpathies de votre noble Curie.

| Document Information | It was under the protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia (House of Savoy) that the citizens of Menton and Roquebrune declared independence from Monaco and pronounced themselves citizens of free cities ("villes libres") in 1848. This letter by Sardinian loyalists is to avow support for the House of Savoy and for the leadership of Charles Albert, King of Sardinia.
