the first sermon preached to king charles at saint james 30 april hazil 162 5 PSALME psalmeii3 I1 1 3.3 IF THE FO foundations UNDA TIONS BE DESTROYED WHAT CAN THE RIGHTEOUS DOE EE ARE still in the season of mortification in lent but W WEEweesearch nolongerfortexts ofmortification theal mightie hand of god hath shed and spred espred a text of morti- fication fication over all the land the last sabboth day was his sabboth who entred eltred then into his everlasting rest be this our sabboth to enter into a holy and thankfull thankfully thankfull acknowledgement of that rest which god af- fords us in continuing to us our foundations for if foundations be destroyed what can the righteous doe I1 scarse know any word in the word of god in which the originale originall Originall is more ambiguous and consequently the translations more various and therfore theofore therfore necessarily also the expositions more divers then in these words there is one thing in which all agree that is the argu- ment and purpose and scope of the psalmo psalme and then in what sense the words of the text may conduce to the scope of the psalmo psalme wee rest in this translation which our church hath accepted and author- ized and which agrees with the first translation knowen keowen to us by way of exposition that is the chadde chalde paraphrase if foundations bee destroyed what can the righteous doe the church of god ever delighted herselfe herselle herselfe in a holy officiousnesse officious nesse in the commemoration of martyrs almost all their solemne salemne solemne and extraordinarie meetings and congregations in the primitive church were for that for the honourable honour able commemoration of martyrs and for that they came tame soone to institute and appoynt appoint certaine liturgies liturgics certaine offices as they called them certaine services in the church I11
