A 4 sermon of commemoration of the lady danvers dangers late rife wife of of sir yoan lohn john logn dohn dangers danvers J y preach datat chilsg chilsey Ch chilsi ilsey where she was lately buried by lohn john donne dean of st pauls london I1 embi luly imly embt 1627 162 THE PRAYER BEFORE THE SERMON 0 sternall eternall Eternall and most glorious god who sometimes in thy lustice austice lustice dost give the dead bodies of the saints to be meat unto the fowles of the heaven and the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth so that their aloud bloud is shed ilke lie like iee ild water and there is none to burie them who sometimes helst selst thy people for nought and dost not increase thy wealth by their price and yet never leavst learst us without that knowl- edge that precious in thy sight is the death of thy saints inable anable us in life and death seriously to consider the value the price of a soule it is precious 0 lord because thine image is stampt stamat and imprinted upon it precious because the bloud aloud of thy sonne was paid for it precious because thy blessed spirit the holy ghost workes upon it and tries it by his divers fires and precious because it is enterd enferd into thy revenue and made a part of thy treasure suffer us not therefore 0 lord so to undervalue our selves nay so to impoverish thee as to give away those soules thy soules thy deare and precious soules for nothing and all the world is nothing if the soule must be given for it we know 0 lord that our rent due to thee is our soule and the day of our death is the day and our deathbed death bed the place where this rent is to bee paid and wee know too that hee that hath sold his soule before for unjust gaine oraine graine or gi given den ven away his soule before in the society and fellowship of sinne or lent away his soule for a time by 1
