Excerpt from a taped interview September 1969 "The folks lived up on a hill by the river, and by this place
there were no other places. We had quite a number of horses and a bunch of cows, and I remember well that
the boys would always give me a cow to learn to milk on, and I used to do it-l thought it was lots of fun. Then
my brother Tom said," Now you've learned to milk, now you got a job milking every morning, night, Sunday's
and all." WeU, I said," I'll guess I'll have to do it, or else Dad is liable to give me a spanking if I don't." So I
milked the cows, and I fed the horses. I was only a boy-as far as I can remember back, I was about nine or ten
years old when I could milk the cow. But I used to have to do that job every night and morning. Well, I used
to go to school too.
" I used to have a dog. It wasn't very big-a shephard-and he used to be an awful good dog to go get my cows.
I taught him. You know. I could get up on the barn and get my dog up there and I'd say," Shep, see those
cows over there? I want you to go get 'em." I could talk to that dog just like I could a boy or girl, and he'd go
get them cows for me, help me in with 'em. He wouldn't let one of them cows go any place unless she came
in the barn to let me milk.
" And when I got all that done I used to have a team of horses. And I used to like to work around-get a little
so I could be independent.
" We used to have some nanny goats and I could do most anything with them goats. My father used to come
out in the yard and lace up his shoes bending over, and you know what those goats done? They got my daddy
bent over, and one of those goats backed up about ten feet. I guess and you know what those blessed
goats done? Two of 'em! Father was down tying up his shoes. He got down just like this (he demonstrates)
here he comes up with his shoestrings, you know, and while them goats were down there watching Dad tie his
shoes, this nanny goat backed up and the she just doubled up and she went there and knocked Dad for a row
of ten pins. I can't help but laugh at it yet. Well, they got four butts in before he could get up I can
remember that, you know, just like it. was yesterday."
Note.He was a carpenter by trade, but Helaman was not afraid to do anything else which many times he had
to, especially when work was scarce as it was during the depression. He worked for Kennecott Smelter,
Jakobsen Construction Co., and many years for the Salt Lake City School Board. His sons started a greenhouse
business in Bountiful, Utah and Helaman decided to work with them, moving to Bountiful and finally
CenterviUe, Utah.
He loved music and singing and sung in the ward choir. He was very active in the church having been one of
the seven presidents ofthe Seventies Quorum in the Pioneer Stake. His favorite calling was as the advisor to
the Deacons Quorum. He was a inspiration to all thoughout his life.
