THE MORMON WAR. Jo Smith and his brother Hiram, as is stated in accounts from Quincy, Ill., by the way of Cincinnati, were killed in Carthage jail, June 27; they were awaiting their trial for treason, and strongly guarded; a Mormon undertook to force his way in, and discharged a pistol at the guard, whereupon Jo and his brethren inside, being armed, fired upon the people without. Jo then attempted to escape from the window, and was shot with a hundred balls. The same day Gov. Ford was in Nauvoo, when it was feared he and his small force were massacred. Of course there was great excitement in all those parts.
