DEFENCE OF MORMONISM. We find in the "Frontier Guardian," a Western journal, quoted by the St Louis Times of Jan 23d, a curious article in defence of Governor Young of Utah, and his polygamical practises. It ap-pears that the Iowa Sentinel expressed its dis-approval of the Goveror’s conduct in keeping sixteen wives; but his example is defended by reference to that of Abraham, David and Solo-mon! The writer says;
If Abraham was guilty of polygamy, we are none the less anxious to be accounted his son—that we may be an heir according to the promise. If David, a man after God's own heart, had wives and concubines without num-ber, we offer it as no apology for rejecting his Psalms, his root or his offspring, or the bright and the morning star. If Solomon followed in the footsteps of his father, David, in this respect, we are not disposed to deride him or reject his wisdom. If the statements concern-ing Gov Young's sixteen wives and fourteen young children be true, he walks or rides in broad daylight with them—is not ashamed of them, but honors and respects them. Contrast this conduct with that of some other men-even men in high places, who are looked up to as honorable men, even statesmen and philoso-phers. We should never dare to lay to the charge of some great men what we have heard them charge one another with; and if Brigham Young has sixteen wives and fourteen infant children, we accept it as no reason for rejecting Mormonism.
The most abject and soul-destroying sensual-ism seems to be the soul, if soul it may be call-ed, of Mormonism, if we may believe its own defenders. The sooner such an infatuation is driven from American soil—the sooner its abominations cease to be protected by the American flag—the better will it be for the fu-ture welfare and honor of the nation.
