Description | The Scroll newspaper has been in print since 1905, when BYU-Idaho was known as the Ricks Academy, a locally run school with a newly-developed high school program. At the time this newspaper was known as the “Student Rays,” and was printed monthly. In 1933 the name of the newspaper changed to “The Purple Flash.” In 1937 the name was changed again to “Viking Flashes,” and in 1938 the name finally changed to “The Viking Scroll.” The paper continued under this name until 1972, when it changed to “The Scroll.” The Scroll is still in print at BYU-Idaho as its official newspaper. |

Rexburg, Idaho 83440 Elder Tuttle Discusses Marriage " The future belongs to those who prepare for it" was the advice of Pres. A. Theodore Tuttle, of the First Council of the Seventy at the Tuesday Devotional Assembly. He encouraged Ricks students to prepare now to become a good husband or wife. The importance of getting married at the right time, to the right person, and in the right place was stressed. Pres. Tuttle told girls to " marry a man who is a fortune in himself." Kindness, sympathy, perseverance, industry and geniality are important traits girls should look for in a future mate. Young men will find the best wife in a girl who will be. a good mother to their children, he said. The way to decide on one's mate is to " write down the names of the prospects and study it out in your mind." Having decided correctly, one will have a burning in his bosom, he told the young people. Pres. Tuttle added that a " Temple marriage does not guarantee success or happiness. You have to earn that." Regular family prayer and little kindnesses will help make home a little heaven on earth. When asked how she would react if two young men showed up for' a date at the same time, Bonnie replied that she would give each of them a turn - but they would have to go in shifts, Bonnie was one of six freshman girls picked by this fraternity of returned missionaries to' represent their " ideal girl". It is also worth mentioning that faculty members are subjected to these rules: Students at Ricks are expected to maintain good standards of grooming and to dress modestly at all times. The wearing of grubbies, curlers, " cut- off" pants, or slacks is prohibited on campus, for women. Men are expected to be clean shaven with hair neatly trimmed. Long hair and beards are not permitted. Men are also expected to be neatly dressed for all occasions and should avoid wearing sweatshirts, grubbies, or cut- off pants on campus. |
