Description | The Scroll newspaper has been in print since 1905, when BYU-Idaho was known as the Ricks Academy, a locally run school with a newly-developed high school program. At the time this newspaper was known as the “Student Rays,” and was printed monthly. In 1933 the name of the newspaper changed to “The Purple Flash.” In 1937 the name was changed again to “Viking Flashes,” and in 1938 the name finally changed to “The Viking Scroll.” The paper continued under this name until 1972, when it changed to “The Scroll.” The Scroll is still in print at BYU-Idaho as its official newspaper. |

Description | Vol. 102 No. 21 SCROLL Ricks College, Rexburg, ID 83440 November 12,1985 LDS Church says farewell to president College inaugural postponed by death President Spencer W. Kimball, 90, worldwide leader of the LDS Church, died Nov. 5 from causes incident to age. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square. Because of the death, the inauguration of Ricks College President Joe J. Christensen was postponed last Friday. The inauguration will be rescheduled by newly sustained church leaders later, college officials said. President Kimball led the church since the death of Harold B. Lee in 1973.. LDS officials said his wife Camilla, his secretary D. Arthur Haycock, a daughter Olive Beth Mack, a sister- in- law Winifred Eyring, and a nurse were with him when he died at 10: 08 p. m. in his Hotel Utah apartment. Since President Kimball's death, the leadership of the church has fallen upon the Council of the Twelve with President Ezra Taft Benson at its head. President Kimball's counselors, Marion G. Romney and Gordon B. Hinckley, have returned to their places in the Council of the Twelve. President Kimball, the 12th president of the church, has been ill since an operation in 1982, making infrequent public appearances. However, he attended the semiannual general conferences of the church and was reported to rarely miss a temple session. Gordon B. Hinckley, 2nd counselor, has g" physically led the church the past few years. o Yet, he was always quick to acknowledge Presi- « • dent Kimball as the church's head. Pres. Hints ckley said no decision was made without Presi- S. dent Kimball's presence. Q President Kimball was born on March 28, | 1895, to Olive Wooley and Andrew Kimball. S He was the sixth of 11 children. He was raised in Arizona where his father was president of the Members of the LDS Church said farewell to President Spencer W. His counselors will be Elder Gordon B. Hinckley and Elder Thomas S. Monson. Elder Howard W. Hunter will serve as acting president of the Council of the Twelve because of the poor health of Elder Marion G. Romney. In a brief statement at a press conference Monday morning, Pres. Benson announced the leaders were ordained and set apart in the temple Monday morning. " This is a day I have not anticipated" said Pres. Benson. He said he prayed that Pres. Spencer W. Kimball's days would be prolonged and that another miracle would be performed on his behalf to extend his life. " Now that the Lord has spoken, we will do our best to move the work forward on earth" the new president said. " Some have expectedly inquired about the direction of the church in the future" he said. He reaffirmed the leadership's committment to the three- fold program now in operation: • To preach the gospel throughout the world. • To perfect the saints. "• To redeem the dead. Pres. Benson, at 86, is the second oldest church president to assume the leadership position. INSIDE COMIC STRIPS Writer Michele Duggar looks at the emergence of the new cartoon ships. Page 14- 15 inside.
