September 19,2000 j Volume 112 Issue 4 j Ricks College, Rexburg, ID 83460 A F I G H T f o r L I F E Larry Stocking, head softball coach and assistant volleyball coach, battles Hodgkin's disease BY TRENT TOONE SPORTS EDITOR In his life, Ricks College head softball and assistant volleyball coach Larry Stocking has always been the aggressor. Now he's fighting for his life. The 34-year-old head softball and assistant volleyball coach, husband and father of three was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease (also known as cancer of the lymph nodes) in July and has been at war ever since. Stocking is also battling tumors in his lungs and other cancerous activity in his diaphragm. Doctors at the University of Utah Hospital have given Stocking only a 45 percent chance of survival through the year. " I was shocked" said Stocking, who has been in chemo-therapy treatment for a couple of months now. " I have always gotten what I wanted in life and now I'm starting to feel the slowdown." Stocking, who used to run five to six miles a day and workout regularly, was slowed down when his doctors told him the cancer had spread rapidly. He said he started to feel something wrong a year ago when he first got the flu. " I had never been sick in my life" he said. "Then after six weeks [the doctor] told me I had pneumonia." Stocking also suffered his sixth concussion during softball practice last season when a thrown ball accidently struck him in the head. The incident caused him temporary memory loss, fever and many headaches, but Stocking really got suspicious when the problems persisted for weeks. Following the season, he received tests at the hospital in Utah that confirmed the worst. Coping with the truth has been understandably difficult for Stocking, but he said he has been able to stay positive thanks to the support of family and friends. "Sometimes when I'm alone I get a little scared, but my family and friends have been here for me" Stocking said. He said he is trying to savor the little things in life more. "It's also a comfort to have the gospel" he said. Stocking has also been supported by those he has worked with and coached. "[The news has been] devastating to our hearts" said Ricks head volleyball coach JoAnn Reeve, who Stocking has worked with for more than 13 years. "We will support him and are thankful for these last years he can be with our program." Sophomore volleyball player Sahara Castillo from Lima, Peru, hasn't seen much of a change in the coach, despite the obstacles. " I don't think he has changed at all" she said, "but in fact has worked harder at doing his job. He's a great example of overcoming problems." Former Ricks softball player Carole Hill, a sophomore from Pleasant Grove, Utah, remembered learning a lot from Stocking. "He taught me more about life more than softball and he had a great knowledge of the game" Hill, who played for him in the spring, said. Craig Evans, the head grounds keeper at McDermott Field in Idaho Falls worked with Stocking for two seasons under the management of the Idaho Falls Braves, at the time a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. " I have high respect for [Stocking]. He's a perfect role model and worthy of dignity and respect" Evans said. "When you hear the phrase 'how could something like this happen to someone like him' I think of the phrase 'the good die young.' I'd take a bullet for him if I could." Besides being inspired by a book about "Sometimes when I'm alone I get a little scared, but my family and friends have been here for me." T h f a t b o u t H o d 1 Also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma 1 Named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized the disease in 1832 • Starts in lymphatic tissue and spreads through the lymphatic vessels 1 7,400 new cases of Hodgkin's disease are predicted this year 1 1,400 people w i l l die f r om Hodgkin's disease this year • Related death rates have fallen by more than 50 percent since 1970 due to advances i n treatment s LARRY STOCKING HEAD SOFTBALL COACH Lance Armstrong's (two-time winner of the Tour De France) battle with cancer, Stocking said he also is inspired in his fight by his kids, whose ages range from 2 to 6. "Even though they tell me to show everyone my bald head and think i f s funny, I need to be here for them" Stocking said as he removed his hat and rubbed his smooth head. Despite not knowing the outcome of his situation, Stocking plans to continue coaching and teaching until he's not able. He also plans to do some traveling in the near future. "I'm going to take a trip to Hawaii and then to New York to see a Yankees game" Stocking said. Stocking first came to Ricks as a student in 1987 and started coaching softball in 1996. n s d i s e a s e • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the two main methods of treating the cancer • Bone marrow transplants may help patients who stop responding to standard methods of treatment • A serious side effect of Hodgkin's treatment is the increased likeliness of developing a second cancer Source: American Cancer Society xoww.cancer.org ' Those who have had mono (infectious mononucleosis) are at a higher risk of Hodgkin's disease ' There is no known prevention to Hodgkin's disease • Symptoms can include coughing or shortness of breath, fever, drenching night sweats, weight loss, itching, tiredness and decreased appetite ' The only way to diagnose Hodgkin's is through a biopsy, an examination of a tissue sample under a microscope |
