McKay Library have become an open book. A campus committee has unofficially proposed to cut the approximately 200,000 campus library books by 50 percent. Ideas also suggest an additional 25 percent would be stored at off site locations but would remain available for student use. "The university is looking at rethinking the library to make it fit the 21st century" said University Librarian Martin Raish. "What should an academic library be in the 21st century? The library in the 20th century is not what we need. We've made a lot of changes already. We are just looking to make more." The goal of the administration and faculty is to use the library space in the best way to serve the students. "The plan is to keep in the building CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 "As far as I know the proposal to cut the collection by 50 percent and a further 25 percent to be stored off site are the results of some studies conducted at the administration level. DAVID PECK PRESIDENT OF FACULTY ASSOCIATION DAVID PACKARD j Scroll Photography The David O. McKay Library has been the topic of discussion lately in regards to future use of building space. "It will "never be considered. We are not considering 50 percent. Those were discussions." FENTON BROADHEAD ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT Official BYU-ldaho administration statement The following is an update on the progress and development of the McKay Building. Overview Over the last few years, a discussion has been ongoing about the McKay Building and Library focusing on four main objectives: 1) improve the overall experience of students, 2) effectively use the McKay Building, 3) rethink the purpose and use of the Library, and 4) better utilize new and existing resources to serve students and faculty. We are absolutely committed to preserving and enhancing the Library as a place where students can discover the joy of learning—including from books. The following phases have been implemented to provide direction for the McKay Building and Library. The cause of death is still being examined, but might be attributed to cardiac arrhythmia. Quinlan was involved in cross country, the psychology society, working in the school Audiovisual Department and serving as the awareness director in the Student Representative Council. He was to graduate this fall. "What I will miss the most about Isaiah is his humility" said Wynn Hill, a student representation coordinator who worked with Quinlan. "He worked so hard for everybody else. He truly did things for other people without wanting any accolades or any recognition." After serving in the Arizona Tempe Mission, Isaiah married Holly Patten. In February, their child, Lucy, was born. Donations may be made to the "Isaiah Quinlan Memorial Fund" account #1359703475, for Holly and Lucy at Wells Fargo Bank. The SRC will put together a book of remembrance for Isaiahs family. Pictures, stories or other mementos may be e-mailed to sbosec@byui.edu by July 16.
