Description |
The paintings and writings of Pierro della Francesca’s established him as an important contributor to developments of the early Italian Renaissance and Resurrection is an excellent example of his distinct style. Piero supposed that the highest beauty could be achieved through mathematical calculations, and his geometric skills aided him in designing compositions of great order and clarity. He is believed to have studied in Florence, where he was influenced by the works of Massacio and Domenico Veneziano. While the details surrounding the creation of this work are unknown, Resurrection was painted as a fresco sometime after 1458 to be placed in the Residenza, one of the official chambers of government in Borgo San Sepolcro (the artist’s native town), in the Sala dei Conservatori. Modeled after a Resurrection in the altarpiece in nearby Sienna Cathedral, this work combines traditional iconographic elements commonly found in religious images of the time with Piero’s mathematical technique in rendering convincing perspective and proportional figures. A powerful, imposing resurrected Christ is presented in triumphal glory overlooking the sleeping Roman soldiers guarding his tomb. His foreshortening of the sentries dramatically draws the viewer into the scene. Piero used strong, bright lighting, often with a silver-blue tonality, to clearly delineate forms and even avoided heavy shadows by reflecting light off the dark portions of his figures. The result, as evident here, is that his figures are noticeably illuminated against the background. He employs traditional symbolism by presenting a barren landscape of winter on the left half behind Christ, with a “resurrected”, blooming springtime scene on the right. He worked throughout Italy producing mainly altarpieces and frescoes with religious themes and wrote a number of treatises on perspective and solid geometry, based on his own artistic experiences. |
