Description
At the beginning of his reign , the third Ming emperor , Yongle (r . 1403-1424) , moved the capital back to Beijing and redesigned the city . Plans for the new capital began in 1406 and the design was for three nested walled cities . A 15-mile long wall enclosed the entire city , but each section also had its own partition . In the heart of the Imperial City was the grand imperial palace compound , surrounded by a moat . This was known as the Forbidden City because of its limited accessibility to all but the emperor ; he alone could enter any section at will. The architecture of the walled complex adheres rigidly to traditional spatial principles , with the orientation of the whole city following a north-south line and the most important buildings face south to honor the Sun . This layout provided an ideal setting to carry out the elaborate ritual of the imperial court .
