1 A journal of my travels to 1864 Caifornia 1849 15 On the 3d of April 1849 I with my Father and my brother ^ started on our Journey. With considerable trouble we got off by 3 oclock in the P M. Our team went well and we got along finely considering the inclemency of the weather as it has been raining hard all day, and the roads were quite muddy. We stoped for the night with Robert McCreery and old friend, and fared well. Distance to day 4 miles. April 4th Rose in the morning and found it still raining. So we concluded to lighten our load which we did by taking out near 400 lbs, leaving 1600 as our lo ad. We then procee ^ on our course, and found the roads getting worse, but we prope- -lled our craft without difficulty our leading through oak barrens most of the way. About 3 oclock we arrived at Brooklyn where we overtook the two Taylors and the two Hindmans, we found them lightening up also. Which being done we started on again, went 4 miles and stoped for the night in the prarie near the farms. Nothing remarkable transpired to day. Distance 15 miles. April 5th We rose tolerably early and found it quite clear. It remained warm and pleasant all day, but we found the roads very heavy through the prarie, still got along very well crossed two streams timber thin mostly oak. We to day killed a little game which made us fine eating, saw some deer but got no shot at them. We arrived at Augusta about the middle of the P M, here 5 teams came up with us belonging or mostly to a Mr Brockman of Brown County on their way to Califor moving their families. We went 2 miles beyond Augusta and stoped for the night. Distance 12 miles. April 6th. We rose and found it clear though it had rained hard most of the night. About 9 oclock we proceeded on our journey and found the roads very bad, crossed two streams that

Biographical Note | Prospector, pioneer, and farmer. Native of Illinois. Tolles delivered mail, ran a general store, and grew fruit after settling in California and Nevada. |
Summary/Description | Correspondence of the Tolles family and James Tolles' overland diary from Rushville, Illinois, to California in 1849. Also included is a holograph copy of the diary made by Tolles' granddaughter, Doris Beard, in 1933. Tolles traveled to California by ox team with his father and brother, Abraham and William Tolles. Daily entries are detailed and describe the nature of the journey and distances traveled. Tolles' company of 40-odd men traded with a group of 2,000 Dakota Indians, struggled with illness, and debated over whether to travel on the Sabbath. Tolles also stopped at Salt Lake City and gives a brief description. Tolles writes extensively about life in California: the rain, disappointing mines, and his work delivering mail. The bulk of the collection is letters between Tolles, his father and brother, and other family members still living in Illinois. James eventually settled in Reno, Nevada, where he became a fruit grower. Much of the correspondence deals with family matters and James' struggle to make a living in the West. |
