THE MORMONS.—Another conflict has arisen at Salt Lake, involving the jurisdic-tion of the United States over the Territory of Utah. Until recently the Territorial penitentiary has been in the hands of the Mormons. An act of Congress of January 20, 1871, places all Territorial penitentiaries under the control of the United States Mar-shal. This act was not recognized by the church authorities, and it was not without a great show of the United States official force that the warden, one A. P. Rockwood, surrendered the penitentiary to the United States Marshal, M. T. Patrick. Then Rock-wood carried off all the furniture, paid for by the United States. With the furniture he took away a convict sentenced to the penitentiary for fifteen years for man-slaughter. This convict was transferred to the city prison. Recently the United States Marshal, by order of Gov. Woods, de-manded of the Territorial Marshal, J. D. L. McAllister, the prisoner who was sentenced to the penitentiary. McAllister refused to surrender him, and the other day when the United States Marshal, with three or four deputies went to the city prison, on ap-proaching it he found it guarded by 200 Mormon officers. He returned, reported the facts to Associate Justice Hawley, who issued a writ for their arrest for resisting the United States officers and concealing pris-oners. To-day Marshal Patrick arrested Territorial Marshal McAllister and ex-Warden Rockwood and brought them be-fore Judge Hawley. The hearing was ad-journed until Wednesday and the prisoners given their liberty on $1,000 bail each to appear at that time.
The Mormons are playing at their old bluff game, defying the United States laws until compelled to obey them, and boast-ing of their illegal acts. They are likely to suffer this time for their lack of judgment.
Governor Woods, Marshal Patrick and the judiciary are performing their whole duty in the matter. The coming session of the United States Court promises to be very potent in ventilating the laws of the Mor-mon Church. Very important criminal cases will come up to develop and punish crimes committed years ago.
