THE UTAH LOTTERY.—George E. Brickett, Deputy Recorder of the Virginia District, comes out in a severe statement in the Alia in refer-ence to the character of this lottery, of which the following is an extract:
About the 21st of August, one Peter Demp-sey called at my office, and informed me that he was about to get up a drawing for Utah mining claims, and wished me to be the depository of the titles to be drawn for. This I consented to, on condition that a friend of mine, whom I wished to benefit, and in whose honesty I had the utmost confidence, should be interested in the enterprise. This gentleman, I cannot think, has lent his consent to the rascality I have al-ready discovered in the scheme. I at the time even volunteered to put in some of my own claims with the rest.
On presentation to me, by Dempsey, of trust deeds of seventy-six different parcels of mining ground, together with a list of the same, I ap-pended to the list a certificate similar to the one you published, which list and certificate I have now in my possession. Afterwards this man, Dempsey, presented me with another certificate, written out, which he said was a "fair copy" of the first, and I, at his request, and relying upon his word, subscribed my name to it. This cer-tificate I now find published in the Alta, ap-pended to a list numbering 320 claims, 244 of which I have bad nothing to do with, nor certi- fied in any manner whatever. Among these last are the "Ophir," "Gould & Curry," "Lady-Bryan," and "Chollar."
From the foregoing, gentlemen, you will per-ceive that the certificate in question is wholly unauthorized and a fraud upon me, and, doubt-less, the whole thing intended to be a fraud upon all the world.
I have no hesitation in pronouncing this "scheme," which was commenced by deception and carried on by fraud, an unmitigated swindle.
I therefore repeat my request that you will no more publish this certificate or my name at-tached thereto—and I hereby give notice to the "Schemers," and to the public, that the claims which I originally contributed for the benefit of my friend, are withdrawn, that the property intrusted to me is ready to be delivered to those who gave it to me, and that I will have nothing further to do with what I consider a base and rascally imposition upon the public.
