THE SALT LAKE. This wonderful Lake, situated in the Great Basin, where the Mormons have located, on one of the land routes to Cali-fornia, has lately been surveyed by L. Gunnison, of the U. S. Topographical Engineers. He found the water of great density, yielding one-third salt, on boiling, and a person in a sitting position, will have his head and shoulders above water—in fact, it is difficult for any one to get his whole body below the surface; and when he comes out, the body is covered with an incrusta-tion of salt, in fine crystals. In the summer, salt is thrown on shore in abundance, and in winter, glauber salts! Three or four large fresh water rivers flow into it, and as there is no outlet the scientific are puzzled to know what becomes of this large body of fresh water.
