The bill pending in Congress to enable Colorado to form a state government has been loaded down with an amendment to admit Utah into the Union, under the title of Deseret. The admission of Utah as a State would be a triumph for the Mormons. Under the doctrine of local sovereignty, the new state would have a right to legal-ize polygamy. The Mormon majority ia the Legislature would be just as competent to pass a law allowing a man to have a dozen or more wives, as the Legislature of Indiana is to pass a law enabling any man to get rid of the only wife he may happen to possess. The moral sense of the whole Country rebels against the legaliza-tion of a brutal species of Mahomedanism in the very heart of the nation. Congress will incur opprobrium if it passes a law to admit Utah at all, till the gentile popula-tion there outnumbers and controls the Mormons. The National Legislature has most certainly the power to passively re-sist polygamy.
