MORMONISM is being attacked just now at both ends of the line, in Utah and in Europe, at the top and at the root. The United States Supreme Court has recently demon-strated that it can punish polygamy in Utah. Intelligence, following the introduction of the railroad and the influx of population, has put it in bad odor even in its holy city. Even of those who formally accept the religion only about one-quarter practise its distinctive abomination. As a matter of fact, the lead-ers are quarrelling without check or hope of reunion since Brigham Young's death, and three-quarters of the church membership has abandoned it first and last. The only means by which its apparent strength of numbers is kept up is the recruiting from the ignorant peasantry and other lowest classes of Europe, engaged by Mormon agents, sys-tematically maintained in various countries. At last a stop is to be put to this also. Secre-tary Evarts has addressed a circular note to the authorities of several countries whence Mormon recruits come to us, requesting these governments, in the interest of humanity and morality, and out of respect to the wishes of this country earnestly striving to make an end of the pest, to take measures to prohibit such organized emigration. There can be as little doubt but that our minister's appeal will be heeded as that it will prove effectual, in connection with the vigorous measures prosecuting in Utah to choke off the new supplies, without which the monster must surely perish.
