CONFERENCE OF THE MORMONS AT THE SALT LAKE TABERNACLE. Services Preliminary to the Dedication of the Temple—Pilgrims From All Lands Present-Great En-thusiasm and Piety by the Carload.
SALT LAKE CITY, April 4.—The con-ference of the church of Latter Day saints preliminary to the dedication of the Salt Lake temple began this morning at the tabernacle, which was crowded to its fullest capacity with 11,000 people. The services opened with the rendition of the hymn, "Come let us anew our jour-ney pursue," which the choir of 400 voices, the vast concourse of saints and the deep-toned tabernacle organ joined in in one grand chorus. Apostle F. M. Ly-man offered the opening prayer. Presi-dent Wilford Woodruff, first presidential counsellor, George Q. Cannon, second presidential counsellor, Joseph F. Smith, and all the twelve apostles, with a single exception, were present.
President Woodruff addressed the as-sembly, saying that he thanked God for the privilege of standing in the midst of this vast concourse and of thanking ten thousand Latter Day saints for their pray-ers to the end that the prophecies and hopes of this day might be fulfilled. First Presidential Counsellor George Q. Cannon followed President Woodruff in a speech recounting the history of the church through its many vicissitudes. The city is crowded with visiting saints from every point of the compass. Fully 30,000 Latter Day saints will attend the dedicatory ceremonies at the temple Thursday. From Canada to Mexico from Europe to the islands of the Pacific saints have journeyed to this convention. This great Mormon temple, forty years in building is a mar-vel of architecture, and the consumma-tion of the finest hope of the Mormon church is the shrine towards which the eyes of the Latter Day saints from every land and nation are turned to-day. Thousands of tourists are coming to the city, and the indications are that 60,000 visitors will witness the ceremonies at the temple.
