Title	[Repairing the old Y bell, 1949]
Description	Then came the 1949 incident when the bell was cracked. It was removed and taken to the physical plant shops where it was repaired. Service of two experts were obtained-- John Champaux, a traveling instructor from the Oxyweld Company, and Frank Hemingway, a welder from the Union Pacific Railroad shops. The entire bell was placed in a brick oven and heated to a high temperature while the welding was performed; then it was allowed to cool slowly.
