Description	C. Edwin Dean, and Dr. Gary Carlson, right, supervise a technician in the installation of new computer equipment on December 11, 1967, in the Smoot Building. The Brigham Young University Computer Services started in 1958 as the Computer Research Center in the Maeser Building, then moved at various times to the Joseph F. Smith Family Living Center, the Jesse Knight Building, the Smoot Administration Building (in 1964), and to its present location in the James E. Talmage Mathematics and Computer Science Building in 1971, each time receiving larger and more sophisticated equipment. It has grown to be one of the largest and most versatile centers in the Western United States. The addition in 1973 was the big IBM360/365 computer with forty terminals throughout campus. In all there were in 1974 more than twenty computers on campus in addition to the big central center, including a Digital Equipment Corporation computer in the Engineering Science and Technology Building with fifty terminals throughout campus. These were all part of Computer Services under the direction of Dr. Gary Carlson. Still, the facilities are not adequate to keep up with the increasing need of faculty and students. The computers are in use twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. In 1963 Dr. Gary Carlson became head of the Computer Research Center, which was reorganized in 1969 into Computer Services (headed by Dr. Carlson) and the Computer Science Department--for academic training of students leading to degrees in the science--headed by C. Edwin Dean. Forty-two departments on campus include some use of the computers in their curricula. The BYU computers can play more than one hundred games, from chess to three dimensional tic-tac-toe, and can solve many business management problems. They can produce synthetic sounds of orchestral instruments, translate many foreign languages into English and back again, work out the most complicated scientific problems from research on binary stars to engineering problems to analysis of archaeological pottery fragments and simultaneously produce the University's payroll, personnel records, grade reports, and class schedules for 25,000 students.
