Description	Map of Europe-based empires in 1900. Historians have distinguished between three kinds of 'empires.' The oldest formula for an empire (associated with Sargon I of Akkad, Ramses II of Egypt, Julius Caesar, & ending with the Ottoman Empire) was a state's military expansion by conquering its neighbors in order to tax more & more peasant populations. Only slightly less older was another formula (associated with ancient Phoenicia & Greece) entailing sending colonists from the mother country to distant lands for purposes of facilitating trade. That was the formula of Europe's expansion during the C15-17 Vogages of Discovery--called the 'First Wave of European Imperialism.' That wave resulted in Portugese, Spanish, French & English overseas empires. Many of these empire's colonies in the Americas became independent during the American Revolution (1776) & the Latin American Revolutions associated with Simon Bolivar (early C19). By then the third formula--called either 'new empire' or the 'Second Wave of European imperialism'--had begun. This was imperialism generated by the Industrial Revolution. Industrialized nations--like England, France, Belgium, & the Netherlands--needed overseas colonies from which they could extract raw materials (cotton, rubber, mineral ores) & to whose native inhabitants they could sell manufactured goods. Some overseas territories were acquired by European nations during this 'Second Wave of European imperialism' (C19-20) because they were strategic sites either along crucial maritime passages (e.g., South Africa) or flanking an important colony.
