Description	During the second decade of the 15th century, the sculptor and architect Filippo Brunelleschi discovered the technique to create linear perspective (representation of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface). Educated in mathematics and Latin, Brunelleschi experimented by applying traditional surveying measurements to pictorial compositions. This image is a reconstruction of the result of his first experiments, a “perspective panel” based on the Florence Baptistery. According to Brunelleschi’s contemporary biographer, Antonio Manetti, Brunelleschi’s first attempt to create the illusion of real space on a two-dimensional plane by painting an image of one wall from the hexagonal Florence Baptistery onto a wooden panel. He then drilled a hole through the back of the painting, exactly at the vanishing point, and set up a mirror in front of the panel. Viewers would stand in the main doorway of the cathedral (see the group of people in the image) and when they peered through the hole into the mirror they would see the reflected picture, which from this angle would give the illusion that the painting and the actual baptistery were one and the same. The discovery of linear perspective was one of the defining characteristics of the Italian Renaissance and Brunelleschi’s ideas were adopted by many contemporary sculptors, artists and architects.
