Description
The
steppe
produced
many
nomadic
conquerors
that
conquered
and
terrorized
the
settled
periphery
of
Eurasia
, but the
greatest
military
leader
was
Gehghis
Khan
who
united
the
nomadic
tribes
of
Mongolia
from
1206
AD
until
his
death
in
1227
AD
. This
image
portrays
a
mounted
nomadic
warrior
atop
his
mount
at
full
gallop
. He
aims
to the
rear
,
demonstrating
the
mobility
and
firepower
that
made
steppe
warriors
unequaled
on the
battlefields
of
Asia
and
Europe
.
Although
the
military
advantages
of
nomadism
was
apparent
as
early
as
2000
BC
, the
invention
of
stirrups
sometime
around
500
AD
allowed
nomads
to
achieve
unparallel
shooting
ability
with a
bow
and
arrow
while
riding
.
Accurate
shooting
on the
run
became
possible
for the
first
time
, as a
rider
could
use
his
legs
to
absorb
the
unsteadiness
of his
galloping
mount
by
standing
in the
stirrups
, as
depicted
by the
rider
here. The
Mongol
army
perfected
the
art
of
shooting
arrows
from
horseback
and in
combat
every
Mongol
carried
a
wooden
frame
with
two
bows
made
out
of
bone
and
sinew
.
One
was for
short-range
work
,
while
the
other
could
fly
for
almost
1000
feet
. Their
quivers
could
hold
as
many
sixty
arrows
,
some
armor
piercing
and
some
fitted
with
whistling
heads
for
signaling
. Their
stirrups
would
allow
him to
string
his
bow
in the
saddle
by
putting
one
end
between
a
foot
and a
stirrup
.
