Description	This image shows a detail from the inner Ionic frieze of the Parthenon. Located on the Athenian Acropolis, the Parthenon was the culmination of Greek architecture and was more lavishly decorated than any Greek temple before it. Phidias was the overseer of the temple's sculptural decoration, and every one of the ninety-two Doric metopes had relief sculptural scenes, as well as every inch of the 424-foot-long Ionic frieze. The pediments were filled with dozens of larger-than-life size statues. While scholars still debate the subject of the frieze, most agree that the Panathenaic Festival procession, that took place every four years in Athens, is being represented. The procession would begin at the Dipylon Gate, pass through the agora (marketplace), and end on the Acropolis. The sculpted procession begins on the west side of the temple, which was facing the gateway to the Acropolis. It then proceeds in parallel lines down the long north and south sides of the building and ends at the center of the east frieze, directly over the doorway to the cella, which would have housed Phidias’ statue of Athena. The frieze vividly communicates the procession’s acceleration and deceleration, as is demonstrated here in the detail of galloping horsemen from the north section. In keeping with the overall attention paid to optical effect, the upper part of the relief is higher than the lower part so that the more distant and more shaded upper zone is as legible from the ground as the lower part of the frieze.
