Description	Albrecht Dürer, one of the leading artists during the Germany Renaissance and Reformation, is celebrated for his innovative work in painting, drawing, the graphic arts, and theoretical writings on art. Around 1496, he began one of his most ambitious projects, which involved producing illustration to accompany the German and Latin texts in the famous Apocalypse book. The Biblical Apocalypse (or Revelation) text had been one of the most popular sources in Christian art since the fourth century A.D., but it gained renewed popularity as a result of the millennial fears associated with belief that the year 1500 would bring the Last Judgment. This woodcut of the four horsemen of the apocalypse is the most famous image from the woodcut set used in the book. It depicts the fateful event when, according to the biblical account, Death, Famine, War and Pestilence will come to torment the human race. Dürer presents the terrifying foursome trampling humanity and the diagonal composition and swirling clouds produces a dramatic atmosphere. Death wears the visage of an emaciated old man with a pitchfork; Famine holds scales that will weigh human souls; War wields a sword; and, Pestilence prepares to shoot his bow and arrow. This woodcut reveals his remarkable ability to create amazing contrast between highlights and shadows that were unusual for prints. With the publication of the first edition in 1498, which Dürer oversaw, he became established as the foremost artist in Nuremberg.
