Description	This image depicts the Apollo Belvedere, a Roman marble copy of a bronze Greek statue believed to have been created by the Athenian sculptor Leochares, who was patronized by Alexander the Great, sometime in the late fourth century BC. It reflects the Greek interest in depicting the gods with idealized bodies, and many artists followed a Canon in order to achieve a perfection of beauty. Rediscovered in the late 1400's near Rome, the statue was placed in the Cortile del Belvedere of the Vatican in 1511, from which it derives its name. Since that time, this classical sculpture has greatly influenced numerous artists, including Michelangelo and Bernini, and Apollo’s proportioned, muscular body became a standard for the ideal male figure. ; Apollo is the Greco-Roman god of light, prophecy, music, agriculture and cattle and an accomplished archer, who is the son of Zeus and Leto, a daugther of the Titans, and the twin brother of the goddess Artemis/Diana. He is often portrayed as a handsome youth with either a lute or a bow and arrow.
