Description	Albrecht Dürer, one of the leading artists during the Germany Renaissance and Reformation, is celebrated for his innovative work in painting, drawing, the graphic arts, and theoretical writings on art. This watercolor of a Great Piece of Turf (1503) is one of many that Dürer produced in his empirical study of the natural world that included sketches of plants, animals and insects. Similar to this contemporary Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer believed that a scientific study of nature revealed truth and beauty, even in the most ordinary and unattractive objects. One of the most admired, this extremely detailed watercolor study of a piece of turf is scientifically accurate and botanists can even identify each springing plant and grass variety, which include dandelions, great plantain, yarrow, meadow grass, and heath rush.
