Description	The Pazzi Chapel designed by the Italian artist and architect Filippo Brunelleschi is a fine example of early Renaissance architecture. As an expression of piety, wealthy Italian families often built chapels in or adjacent to major churches; the Pazzi family commissioned Brunelleschi to construct a chapel for the Franciscan Church of Santa Croce in Florence and the small chapel served as Santa Croce’s chapter house, a place of assembly for monks to conduct business. His studies of ancient Roman architecture inspired him to design one of the first independent Renaissance buildings with a central-plan. His novel plan was achieved through careful mathematical calculations and this building exemplifies his mature style that produced elegant, regularly proportioned structures. While the building is rectangular, twice as wide as it is deep, a hemispherical dome creates a central square space. The building has three stories, the second including the arches and pedentives that support a star-vaulted twelve-ribbed dome above. The dome is supported by two short barrel-vaults on its sides. Although the building began in 1442, the Pazzi Chapel was not completed until sometime around 1465 after Brunelleschi’s death, and alterations to his original design occurred, particularly on the exterior. The front of the chapel has a beautiful though somewhat awkward loggia, which is believed to be a later addition to meet the needs of the monks who held meetings in the chapel. Six Corinthian columns support a screen wall that is decorated with shallow rectangular panels and pilasters and topped by an entablature and porch roof raised on slender piers. The rational clarity of his religious structures reflect Brunelleschi’s humanist belief that geometric principles could reveal the mysteries of God.
