Description
This
image
depicts
a
step
in the
process
of
making
a
stained-glass
window
,
which
is
formed
from
small
panels
of
dyed
and
painted
glass
set
between
strips
of
lead
that were then
placed
in the
window’s
metal
framework
.
While
the
process
of
coloring
glass
has been
known
since
the
third
millennium
BC
, the
art
of
producing
stained-glass
windows
culminated
during
the
Gothic
period
(ca
.
1130-1330
AD)
,
when
windows
were
created
with
unprecedented
beauty
and
vividness
. The
production
of
stained-glass
windows
was
expensive
and
required
a
great
deal
of
time
and
skill
.
First
, the
master
designer
outlined
the
entire
composition
of the
planned
window
onto a
wooden
board
covered
with
chalk
or
white
paint
,
paying
great
attention
to
mark
each
detail
and the
colors
of
each
section
.
Next
,
glassblowers
created
flat
sheets
of
colored
glass
,
which
were
given
to
glaziers
,
who
specialized
in
working
with
glass
. The
glaziers
cut
the
sheets
of
glass
to the
appropriate
size
and
shape
with
specially
designed
and
heated
iron
shears
. By
fusing
one
layer
of
colored
glass
to
another
,
glass
workers
were
able
to
create
a
wide
range
of
luminous
colors
. The
next
step
was for
painters
to
add
details
such
as
physical
features
and
clothing
to
each
piece
with a
black
or
dark
brown
enamel-like
paint
by
tracing
the
master
design
placed
beneath
the
colored
glass
,
which
can
be
seen
here. The
painted
glass
was then
heated
to
fuse
the
painted
lines
to the
glass
.
Finally
, the
various
pieces
of
glass
were
connected
by
strips
of
lead
,
which
, in
addition
, to
linking
the
parts
together
, also
divided
the
colors
so
that the
overall
design
was
apparent
. A
major
element
of
Gothic
cathedral
architecture
,
stained-glass
windows
enhanced
the
decor
,
presented
religious
iconography
, and
provided
a
mystical
lighting
that
symbolized
heavenly
rays
and
enlightenment
.
