Description	The pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheilegen (Fourteen Saints), built near Staffelstein, is one of the most magnificent examples of German Baroque architecture. The German architect Balthasar Neumann’s extremely ingenious design incorporates elements from Baroque architecture that Neumann observed during his travels in Austria and northern Italy and his studies in Paris. This image displays the interior of the pilgrimage chapel; although Neumann included elements from a traditional Gothic church (such as the apse, transept, nave and western towers), the decoration and arrangement of space produce a much livelier and vivacious atmosphere. The floorplan abandons the use of straight lines to instead create a continuous flow of oval and cirucular spaces, often topped with domes and barrel vaults, but still retains harmonious, symmetrical proportions. The influence of Italian Baroque designs is evident in the undulating walls and ceiling that give the impression of continuous movement and the walls seem to pulse with energy. This effect is heightened by the bright sunlight that streams through numerous large windows. The rich decoration, consisting of gilding, murals, plasterwork and statuary, and floating surfaces have the effect of an airy elegance. In this impressive building, architecture, painting, sculpture, and music all combine to produce an powerful atmosphere in which to worship.
