Description	Martin Johnson Heade belonged to the Hudson River School of painters. The Hudson River School was a group of nineteenth-century American artists who depicted romantic views of a vast American landscape. In his Lake George, Heade promotes the American landscape as an Edenic paradise covered in virgin forests and clear lake waters. Lake George was a favorite subject for painters of the Hudson River School, and Thomas Cole, a contemporary of Heade, had shown his fascination for the scenery of Lake George by writing a poem about it. In his poem, Cole noted the Indian wars and battles of the American Revolution fought in the area, evoking patriotic connections with Lake George as an important American landmark. Despite these battlefield associations, Heade depicted Lake George as pristine and peaceful, as if permanently untouched by any such violence. A small boater provides the only evidence of human presence in the area. Despite the inclusion of the man, the surrounding natural landscape appears vast and inhospitable. Heade’s highly realistic style and painstaking attention to detail in Lake George results in a vast romanticized landscape typical of the Hudson River School and romantic era paintings of the nineteenth century. 'Lake George' by M.J. Heade demonstrates both the luminism and realism of Romantic painting. The notable artistry of Heade is evident in the smooth surface of the painting, without a trace of the artist's brushstokes. Also noteworthy is the precision of the rocks at right.
