Description	Victory and conquest are two themes which are present in this fresco of the biblical figure Joshua. This fresco, which was discovered relatively recently, is located in the north arm of the Katholikon at Hosios Loukas. Previously, this fresco had been covered up by mosaics. The inscription on the fresco indicates that an angel or "commander" of the Lord's armies, of whom only a wingtip and a swordtip survive on the fresco (not shown in this slide), has appeared to strengthen the military leader Joshua. This theme of conquest could suggest that this fresco celebrated the Byzantine capture of Arab-held Crete in 961. This event was prophecied by St. Loukas, the monk who founded the monastery where this fresco is located. It is thought that this fresco was created soon after the military victory. Joshua stands with his arm extended, dressed in full armor. His helmet is decorated with pseudo-Kufic designs. The use of these pseudo-Kufic motifs, which resemble Arabic writing, can be found in Greece starting in the tenth century. Similar pseudo-Kufic designs can be found in other many areas of Hosios Loukas as well.
