Description	Hitler & British PM Chamberlain at Munich, Sept. 1938. Nazi Germany rearmed (in violation of Versailles) then occupied N Czeckoslovakia, which included some German-speaking regions, on grounds that Germany needed 'Lebensraum' (living space). Thinking he could avoid war, British PM Chamberlain met Hitler at Munich, where Chamberlain turned a blind eye to Germany's occupation of the Sudentenland (N Czechoslovakia) in exchange for Hitler's promise that he would engage in no additional acts of aggression. 'Munich' came to symbolize both a posture of cowardice & an attitude of naiveté toward aggression by brutal dictators. Germany's invasion of Poland about a year after the Munich Conference ignited WWII.
