Biographical Note	American pioneer. Grain merchant from Indiana who retired in San Jose, California, in 1891.
Summary/Description	Handwritten account of Keith's overland journey from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Weaverville, California, in 1850. Keith paid a "Mr. Platner" to guide him and seventeen others to California. After being swindled and abandoned at Fort Laramie, Keith was furnished with provisions by the fort's commanding officer. The diary describes difficult traveling conditions, lack of feed and clean water for the company's animals, and problems with Indians. Keith also passed through Salt Lake City and gives a brief description.
