Young Navajo sisters from the Indian Placement Program serenade President George Albert Smith in June 1949. He began work in their homes as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve with permission from President Heber J. Grant. In a talk he said ""I have had an interest in those Indians, and felt the urge to help "". I have been in their homes, in many places, and have seen their poverty, their patience, and their forebearance." One of George Albert Smith's first acts as President of the Church was to visit with top government officials in Washington, D.C. about the plight of the Indians.
