Monument erected in honor of the Mormon Battalion. The monument sits on the Utah State Capitol grounds in Salt Lake City, Utah. Architects and contractors Frank Chase Walker and James M. Morrison came up with the idea for the monument in 1905. They eventually sold their dream to the State of Utah and the Mormon Battalion Monument Commission was created to carry out construction. The stone carver was Gilbert Riswold. It began construction in 1920's and was completed in 1927. Orginally dedicated on May 30, 1927, the monument was refurbished from 1992 through 1997 and re-dedicated November 1, 1997. The four side panels tell the story of the Battalion: The Enlistment; the March; the Discovery of Gold; and the Arrival of the Pueblo Detachment. The Mormon Battalion Man is meant to inspire us to be living memorials of their great dedication to the call from a Prophet of God.
