In April 2000, the Church announced plans to build Historic Kirtland, Ohio by reconstructing and restoring buildings to their 1830s appearance. This one-room schoolhouse was constructed on the site of the foundation where a schoolhouse was originally built in 1819. That facility was the cultural heart of the community, serving for educational, civic, and religious purposes. This rebuilt structure was dedicated on May 18, 2003 by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
