The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized on 6 April 1830 in the log home of Peter and Mary Whitmer located in Fayette, New York. Prior to that, the Prophet Joseph Smith completed the translation of the Book of Mormon here. Some nineteen or twenty sections of the Doctrine and Covenants were revealed in Fayette. This replica home, patterned after local homes that date back to that period, was constructed on the exact site of the original home. It was dedicated along with the adjacent visitors' center/chapel on 6 April 1980 by President Spencer W. Kimball.
