The Prophet Joseph Smith learned of the Book of Mormon plates and the Hill Cumorah on the night of 21-22 September 1823 from Moroni, a heavenly messenger. The Prophet visited the hill every year for four years. He was given custody of the plates on 22 September 1827. Hill Cumorah is located in western New York on State Highway 21, about two miles north of I-90. The hill is about three miles from the Smith log home, where the Prophet and his family were living in 1823. This view shows the west side of the hill.
